In 2005, the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) approved a professional development program that can be used by Board Certified Oncology Pharmacists (BCOP) as an alternative to recertification by examination. The program is offered by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) in conjunction with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA). ACCP, as the official provider approved by BPS, records and reports recertification credit earned in this program directly to BPS.
The professional development program consists of three components to provide those BCOPs who require recertification credit the opportunity to earn the required number of hours. The three components of the program are:
- Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course.
- Oncology Pharmacy Home Study Syllabus.
- Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions.
Each component includes a Web-based self-assessment test. Each component is priced separately. BCOPs may select from among these components, each of which will be available annually, to earn the required number of hours during their recertification cycles. Each program component is described below.
Note: The Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course must be successfully completed at least one time during the recertification cycle, and no more than three times during the cycle.
The Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course
The Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course is offered annually and available for recertification credit.
The course content is based on the BPS domains and related tasks and knowledge statements. BCOPs who take the
Oncology Review Course and successfully complete the Web-based self-assessment examination by the established
deadline will earn at least 20.0 hours of oncology recertification credit. Actual hours available through the
course will vary from year to year, based on the course content and structure.
Note: BCOPs will be required to successfully complete the review course at least once during their
seven-year recertification period and may take the course for recertification credit no more than three times
during the recertification period.
2011 Course Availability
BCOPs may attend the live course, to be presented April 28-30, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas, or complete the home study version of the course, made available on about July 1, 2011. The home study version of the course is available in both online/Web-based version and as a CD-ROM and workbook package. Both the live and home study formats of the course include access to a Web-based self-assessment test. BCOPs who take the course and successfully complete the self-assessment test will earn at least 25.0 hours of recertification credit. The Web-based self-assessment test must be submitted by November 30, 2011 to be eligible for recertification credit.

Oncology Pharmacy Home Study Syllabus
The Oncology Pharmacy Home Study Syllabus consists of a collection of print articles from the primary literature
that focuses on advances across the four domains of oncology specialty practice. BCOPs who read each article
included in the Home Study Syllabus and successfully complete the Web-based self-assessment examination on the
content of the articles will earn 15.0 hours of recertification credit. The Home Study Syllabus is updated
annually and available in July of each year.
2011 Home Study Syllabus Availability
The 2011 Home Study Syllabus will be made available for recertification credit on July 1, 2011. The Web-based self-assessment examination for the Home Study Syllabus must be submitted by November 30, 2011 to be eligible for recertification credit.
More information on the 2011 Oncology Pharmacy Home Study Syllabus will be available in 2011.
Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions
The Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions are live educational
programs that focus on new developments in oncology pharmacy. On an
annual basis, BCOPs may earn at least 5.0 recertification hours for the
live educational programming following successful completion of a
Web-based self-assessment examination. Actual hours available through
live programming may vary from year to year, based on the content of
the programming
The Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions are updated annually and are presented at the Annual Meeting of the
Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA), and repeated at the Annual Meeting of the American College of
Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and at the Midyear Clinical Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
BCOPs who wish to earn recertification credit for the Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions must register and attend
one of these meetings and attend the specialty sessions in full at the meeting in order to purchase access to the
Web-based post test. Upon successful completion of the post test, BCOPs will earn at least 5.0 hours of recertification
credit. Partial credit is not available. The self-assessment examination must be submitted by December 31, 2011.
2010 Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Session Availability
In 2011, the Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Sessions will be presented first during the 2011 HOPA Annual Meeting, March 23–26 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Specialty Sessions will be repeated at the 2011 ACCP Annual Meeting, October 16–19, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, December 4-8, in New Orleans, Louisana. Professional Development Program Schedule
The components of the professional development program have been structured to provide BCOPs who are due to
recertify the opportunity to earn sufficient recertification hours to satisfy the requirements established
by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), the certifying agency. The program credit requirements for
recertification as established by BPS will be phased in over the next several years. The following grid presents
the phase-in schedule, as well as the minimum number of recertification credit hours to be made available, by year,
for each component of the program. BCOPs may select from among these components, each of which will be available
annually, to earn the required number of hours during their recertification cycles.
Note: The Oncology Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course must be successfully completed at least one time
during the cycle, and no more than three times during the cycle.
